The transformative influence of technology in contemporary English language education, especially through augmented reality (AR) on mobile devices, has become a focal point of interest. This study delves into how mobile AR applications, specifically Google Lens, can enhance vocabulary acquisition in English language learning. Vocabulary is a cornerstone of language proficiency and effective communication and AR technology offers an interactive and immersive learning experience that surpasses traditional methods. Despite the increasing interest in AR. Limited research has examined its specific role in vocabulary development among secondary students, highlighting the necessity of this investigation. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods approach was employed in this study, comprising a quantitative phase followed by a qualitative phase. Thirty eighth-semester students from Universitas Islam Malang, who have experience using mobile AR applications for vocabulary acquisition, participated in the quantitative survey. The qualitative phase involved interviews with four selected participants based on their performance in the quantitative phase, aiming to provide deeper insights into their experiences and perceptions. The findings showed quantitative analysis revealed a weakly positive but statistically insignificant correlation (r = 0.082, p = 0.666) between students' perceptions of mobile AR and their vocabulary acquisition. However, the descriptive statistics indicated high average vocabulary mastery scores among participants, with mean scores around 101.50 out of a possible 135 and standard deviations around 8.23. Qualitative findings shed light on the positive impact of Google Lens on students' motivation, comprehension, and overall learning experience. Participants reported that the tool's real-time feedback and accessibility significantly enhanced their vocabulary learning. While the quantitative results did not show a significant correlation, the qualitative insights underscored the educational value of mobile AR applications. The study highlights the importance of combining quantitative and qualitative approaches to fully understand the impact of AR on language learning. The findings suggest that mobile AR applications like Google Lens can play a crucial role in enhancing vocabulary acquisition, providing valuable insights for educators and future research in the field.
