dc.description.abstract | The pandemic that came in 2019 has changed day to day life, economy, industy, social life, created depression and anxiety symtoms, and caused a difficult time to shift behavior of working from home. In education, especially, the impact of this pandemic has collapsed learning process and reached its most critical level where students that live in the area with less support against the situation should drop their school. Even though the schools and any educational intitutions had switched their behavior from traditional face-to-face teaching model to virtual one from the very beginning in order to overcome and compensate the pandemic situation, the happening seems not as perfect as the paper plan. The clutter to adapt the urgent sudden shift happens around the globe. The unadequate technological support, mind and perception, behaviour, and many others can be the reason.
This study is aimed at observe: (1) what the media is used during online learning in Jayapura under the minimal internet support, (2) how teachers’ performance is during online learning using the selected media, (3) what challanges are faced by students during online learning using selected media, and (4) what advantages of using the selected media are.
123 students participated in this study. Those students derived from 4 different schools and 3 different grades. 57 participants were student from 2 schools in urban area which has 16 senior high schools in total, and other 66 participants were student from remote area which has 3 senior high schools in total.
The data collection instrument used a questionnaire which the items addopting International Comparative Analysis of Learning and Teaching (ICALT) survey to measure students’ perception of teachers’ performance and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to measure the challenges and advantages of utilizing a teaching media during online learning. The open-ended unstructured interview was also applied to obtain better description.
The questionnaire results were converted into Likert Scale and, then, multiplied by total respondent choosing the certain option. All scores were summed up to find total score. The mean scores were, also, calculated by deviding total score to total students in order to conlude the decision. The taking decision to see the perception level of each item used the comparison of the mean score to the level average by Oxford: positive (3.5-5.0), neutral (2.5-3.4), negative (1.0-2.4).

The result revealed that teachers in urban area used more applications frequently than teachers in remote area tending to use single messenger-based application only. Teachers’ performance were leveled positive, while the challenges and the advantages of utilizing online media during online learning were leveled neutral. The interview resulted two different models of teachers’ consideration in selecting the online learning media considering the circumtances faced by students.
Based on the application of online teaching media by teachers, students in urban area faced more challenge than students in remote area.The internet access, higher expenses, and understanding the material provided online were the major issues faced by students in urban area whereas students in remote area did not face.
The suggestions were addressed to (1) government or policy-maker in any place with similar characteristics to be more flexible in setting the rules during pandemic crisis and (2) teachers and educators to be wiser in adopting the proper technology as online teaching media. | en_US |
