Student’s Anxiety In Speaking English : A Case Study At English Department Of UNISMA

Abstract
Speaking is one of the important skills that must be mastered by students. So they can explore their ideas. To master speaking skills, students must practice a lot, must have good self-confidence, and love to talk. In fact most of students are afraid to speak, one of the causes is anxiety. Anxiety is a psychological symptoms that can interfere student’s mentality. Sometimes anxiety make students losing their self-control student with anxiety they are more easier getting stress, depression, and also difficult to survive during learning process. This study was carried out to investigate what factors may contribute to student’s anxiety in speaking English and how the lecturer support and motivate the students in solving their anxiety in speaking English at the 3rd semester in the academic year 2021/2022 of English department education of University of Islam Malang based on the students’ perspectives. The method was used in this study was qualitative method with case study approach. Student with the highest anxiety 1 male dan 1 female will be selected as participants. The data were gathered through structed interviews and questionnaire. The result of the study showed that limited vocabulary, students’ belief about English language, ridiculed by peers, lack of preparation, less confidence, speaking in front of the class, incomprehensible input, and teacher personality were the eight factors that may contribute to the students’ anxiety in speaking English. Moreover there are three method the lecturer support and motivate the students in solving their anxiety in speaking English such as : applying mix language (code mixing and switching) in speaking class, mirror talk method, giving new vocabulary from lecturer in every meeting and increasing vocabulary through movie.
