Students’ Perception of the Use Speaking Presentation Method toward Speaking Ability
Abstract
Students at SMA at Madrasah Aliyah Al-Ma'arif Singosari have been involved in an oral presentation in English class by the teacher to assess their speaking ability. During the presentation, students may experience several things related to the use of English. In this case, the perception based on their experience during the English presentation needs to be reviewed by the researcher. This study aims to find out how students perceive the use of the speaking presentation method at Madrasah Aliyah Al-Ma'arif Singosari.
This research used qualitative research to discover the students’ perception of the use speaking presentation method toward speaking ability. This research was conducted on the major of science and language at third grade students Madrasah Aliyah Al- Ma’arif Singosari. This study used semi structured interview to collect the data. The researcher used purposive sampling to choose three students who were good in presentation in the class.
The research results show that students' perceptions of learning speaking presentations in class have positive response. The three participants expressed their joy, enthusiasm, excitement, and challenge with the speaking presentation task. Through speaking presentation assignments, students can demonstrate English language skills, improve English language skills and practice self-confidence. Even though they sometimes make mistakes related to their speaking such as using sentences that are not grammatical or mispronounced, they get feedback and correction from the teacher. From this feedback, students realized that they still needed to improve their English speaking skills through frequent practice of speaking English, learning English by actively participating in discussions during speaking presentations. Students also realize that the teacher has important role in guiding students during the speaking presentation learning process.
Based on the finding of the study, the teacher should provide more guidance, support and also motivation to the students to speak in English and increase activities that support students’ fluency in speaking English. The researcher would like to advise the students to improve their speaking ability and always correct the errors based on feedback from the teacher.
