The Students’ Perspective on Learning English Integrative Motivation and Instrumental Motivation of English Foreign Language: Case Study of LPBA Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo
Abstract
This study aimed to enhance integrative and instrumental motivation. This study focuses on knowing the motivation of santri in learning foreign languages at LPBA Nurul Jadid. LPBA Nurul Jadid is a non-formal educational institutions that focuses on developing foreign language skills, including English and Arabic, among santri. Motivation to learn English as a foreign language in LPBA Nurul Jadid is influenced by various factors that can lead students to achieve better language skills. Understanding these factors is key to improving the effectiveness of learning programs in LPBA Nurul Jadid. Understanding the motivation to learn English among LPBA Nurul Jadid students requires an in depth analysis of the various factors that influence it. By identifying and optimizing these factors, LPBA Nurul Jadid can improve the quality and effectiveness of English learning programs, as well as help students achieve the expected language competencies. Further research focusing on these motivational aspects will provide valuable insights for the development of better learning strategies.
This study used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used questioner and interview as instruments to collect the data. The researcher adapted the questioner from Gardner’s Attitude, Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) with the integrative and Instruments Scales. The respondents of this study were elementary, intermediate and Advanced level of LPBA Nurul Jadid student. There were all 90 students.
The results show that students have diverse reasons for learning English, such as the desire to connect with English-speaking cultures and practical benefits such as career advancement. The inclusive and supportive educational environment at LPBA, including in-depth English language practice, role modelling, competition, and diverse learning opportunities, motivates students to engage in language learning actively. Although students face barriers such as culture shock, they prefer learning through practice, discussion, quizzes, interactive activities, and reading comprehension. Students' preferred language aspects include speaking, listening, writing, and reading comprehension. By understanding students' motivations and creating an inclusive learning environment, educators can improve students' engagement and learning outcomes in English learning at LPBA Nurul Jadid.
Through the next researcher efforts focused on motivation, by conducting the next research based on these findings, LPBA Nurul Jadid can continue to improve their English learning program and provide better support to students in achieving their learning goals. LPBA Nurul Jadid can enhance its English language learning programs, ensuring that students receive the support they need to achieve proficiency and success in English language acquisition.
