Investigating EFL Students’ Perception of Grammarly Premium as an Automatic Writing Evaluation in the Aspects of Writing: A Narrative Inquiry

dc.description.abstract Writing is essential in the field of education since many tasks require academic writing. The students must organize the aspects of writing extremely well during the writing process in order to produce good writing. In order to produce the appropriate writing, the students have to examine which aspects of writing that need to revise. Meanwhile, sometimes the students still have a problem with that. In line with technological advancement and to address these issues, students can self-evaluate by using Automatic Writing Evaluation (AWE). One of the AWE types that has gained popularity recently is Grammarly. This application has a Free version and a Premium version. This study aimed to find out students’ perceptions of the use of Grammarly Premium as an automatic writing evaluation in the aspects of writing. The research design used narrative inquiry with purposive sampling techniques and the data were analyzed qualitatively. The participants are EFL Students at the University of Islam Malang in the academic year 2018. The researcher took two participants who have experience with the use of Grammarly Premium. The researcher used an interview with semi-structured interview models as the instrument. The findings showed that the two participants have positive and negative perceptions of the use of Grammarly Premium in the aspects of writing. The positive perception of Grammarly Premium is this application helped them in each aspect of writing such as giving useful feedback in order to check the tone of their content, giving paraphrase suggestions, also checking language, vocabulary, punctuation, and capitalization. Meanwhile, the negative perception is this application still has disadvantages such as get errors and over-checking in terms of aspects of writing vocabulary and language. But the two participants can solve these problems by adding new vocabulary to the dictionary in Grammarly Premium and double-checking the suggestion that Grammarly Premium has given. Based on the finding of the study, it can be concluded that in the use of Grammarly Premium as an Automatic Writing Evaluation there is positive and negative perception. The positive perception covers useful feedback in content, organization, vocabulary, language, and mechanics. Then, the negative perceptions cover errors and over-checking in terms of vocabulary and language. According to the report's findings, to learn how Grammarly Premium affects students' writing, future researchers can look at the same topic using different techniques, such as experimental study.
